The team specialized in repairs and assemblies are responsible for the implementation of all and any work that is outside the maintenance routine of the contracts. A specific management is devoted to carry out this type of service with specialized engineers and technicians. As it is the case of projects with determined start and finish projects, most of the time, with an interruption of the customer’s productive process, planning is defined as the main action to be focused. This group should consider all safety, quality and specialized requirements, in such a way to guarantee operational return within the shortest time and with the optimum results.

Key Performance Indicators – KPI

Some KPIs are used to guarantee the success of the project, such as anticipated demand identification, correct sizing and advanced resource availability, team training with event simulations, presentation of the area to the performing team, preparation of APRs (Preliminary Risk Analyses) and division of the team in work shifts. Follow up graphs related to the undertaking are also presented (Pert CPM and “S” Curve) and systematic follow up carried out.

During the stoppage, a final book is prepared after the delivery of the area or equipment to the operation. The experiences lived in the operation are reported in this book.

Maintenance of Sliding Gate Valve Mechanisms

Magnesita has ample experience in the engineering, manufacture, supply, assembly and maintenance of sliding gate valve mechanisms for ladles and tundishes; totally focused on the system operational safety. To maintain these mechanisms, Magnesita also supplies spare parts, which can be supplied by means of a performance contract and/or through direct sale.

In North America, Magnesita’s sliding gate valve business is part of the KMR (Krosaki-Magnesita Refractories) joint venture company.

Nickel Plating

Magnesita has a technology partnership in Brazil that works to extend the life of copper mold liners used in the continuous casting of steel. This process involves reconditioning of the mold liner surfaces by electrodeposition that may be carried out in two processes: Ni-conventional and Ni-cobalt. The molds are usually reconditioned in pairs so that the nickel plating time for two molds is the same as for only one piece. Quality control is strictly enforced in the electro-deposition process, providing:



  • Steel quality increase and cost reduction
  • Systematized bath quality control, with constant analyses related to its chemical characteristics
  • Monitoring of bath raw material, with rigid control of the specific norms for process purity
  • Monitoring of deposition results, with laboratory simulations and analyses by means of the “Hull Cell” trial
  • Monitoring of process parameters and hourly analyses during its entire run (120 hours, usually)
  • Rigorous tests for all electroplated layers (fire and ultra-sound tests) along their entire extension
